Everyman's Library

A year from now, I visited London with some of my friends. I remember during our visit to Camden Town, I bought an old edition of “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brönte in a small bookshop of the neighborhood. This morning, I was looking through this book and it caught my attention a section in the end called “Everyman’s library”.

This section, written by Ernest Rhys, consists of a classified list of the most famous books in the world that every man and woman must own. Among them, appear classics such as Jane Austen’s novels, Charles Dickens’, the Brönte Sisters’ etc.  The list, however, goes beyond that. It includes works from the classics (and by classics I mean Ancient Greek and Latin authors such as Homer, Aristotle or Cicero); biographies of major authors, for example, Benjamin Franklin or Samuel Coleridge; historical, philosophical, oratorical books.

This list got me thinking about what books people should own or what books I would like to have in my own little library. Since everybody has different taste (obviously not all of us have the same interests), I would like to invite you to think about 10 indispensable books that you would like to add in your own library. Here is my list, enjoy!

      3.  Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman

      4.  The Best of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

      5.  Amores by Ovid

      6.  Bartleby by Herman Melville

      7. King Lear by William Shakespeare

      8. The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe

      9.  Aeneid  by Virgil

     10. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Ara ja fa un any, vaig viatjar a Londres amb unes amigues. Recordo que durant la nostra visita a Camden, vaig comprar una edició antiga del llibre “Cims Borrascosos” (Wuthering Heights) en una llibreria petita del barri. Aquest matí, estava fullejant el llibre i m'ha cridat l'atenció un apartat situat al final anomenat “Everyman's Library”.

Aquesta secció, escrita per Ernest Rhys, conté una llista dels llibres més importants del món que tothom hauria de tenir. Entre aquests llibres, podem trobar clàssics com les novel·les de Jane Austen, les d'en Charles Dikens, o de les germanes Brönte. La llista però comprèn més apartats. Hi inclou obres clàssiques (i amb clàssiques em refereixo als escriptors de la antiga Grècia i Roma com ara Homer, Aristòtil o Ciceró); biografies d'autors importants com ara Benjamí Franlkin o Samuel Coleridge; llibres històrics, filosòfics i d'oratòria. 

La llista m'ha fet pensar en quins llibres hauria de tothom casa seva o quins m'agradaria tenir particularment a mi a la meva petita biblioteca. Per això, encara que cadascú té un gust diferent (i òbviament no tots tenim els mateixos interessos), m'agradaria convidar-vos a pensar en 10 llibres que no podrien faltar a la vostra biblioteca.

La lista me ha hecho pensar en qué libros deberían tener todos en casa y en qué libros me gustaría tener a mí en mi pequeña biblioteca. Por eso, a pesar de que todos tenemos preferencias (y obviamente no todos tenemos los mismos intereses), me gustaría invitaros a pesar en 10 libros que no puedan faltar en vuestra biblioteca.
